Do you want the chainmail armor to be craftable? You’re definitely not alone with that thought and that is why this add-on was created. With this add-on you will be able to craft the chainmail armor!
This is a well balanced add-on which lets you craft the chainmail armor. Hopefully it’s something which will be added to the vanilla version of Minecraft soon.
It’s really good for survival mode in case you don’t have enough items to craft other armor types. They are made by using the following crafting recipes.

Installation
if the .mcaddon file does not work use the .zip, extract the files and touch them to import them into minecraft

Cool but it does still cost an iron ingot but ok
This is a great addon and makes a lot of sense. But I feel that is just slightly redundant because it’s easier to make iron armor than to turn the iron into nuggets and chains then turn it into armor. But overall, good addon.
I think it’s more of a wow this is cool mod than a practical one
