Hey folks, I’m GameWizard and I’m going to review this addon!
TEXTURES: There are only two textures in this addon so this section will be brief. They honestly look great! They match up very well with vanilla textures and have a sense of belonging in the world. The archer in particular matches very well. I did want to mention that the chainmail byrnie on the swordsman is slightly odd. Plate pauldrons and a full helmet generally wouldn't be combined with a simple chain byrnie. This isn't a big deal, but basic plate armor covering the chest, stomach, and back could look more consistent, or just more chain extending over the shoulders, changing the byrnie to a haubergon, and forming a coif under the helmet. Sorry I'm kind of an armor geek.
GAMEPLAY: The gameplay in this addon is simple but pretty much perfect. The ability to strategically place archers in towers to defend the village or hire guards to go adventuring with you is very enjoyable and it's easy to get attached to them. This addon encouraged me to try something new: fortifying a village. I had never built palisades or guard posts or basic defenses before and I found it to be one of the most criminally underrated and fun things I've done in a world. I originally picked this addon up in 2018 and it was far higher quality than many others. It carries that to this day. One suggestion I'd like to make in regards to hiring the villagers is that the player should only be able to hire nitwits. They don't have a job, and now that they spawn naturally they are much more numerous.
FINAL VERDICT: This addon is a blast of the best kind of nostalgia. It feels like it contributes to the natural flow of gameplay in Minecraft. The new villagers look like they belong just as much as the default villagers. I look forward to seeing more updates to this iconic addon and, as you might have guessed by the five star review, I would definitely recommend it.
