Trust me you'll die , if you touch the grass, and you definitely die if you die, and custom death messages, Resource pack is not mandatory but you need to activate it for more experience Etc..!PS:- You'll never spawn on grass, You'll know what is meaning of that is if you read the full article!

So, in other words, you could recreate this by going into creative and setting a command block with "execute @a ~ ~ ~ detect ~ ~-0.1 ~ grass_block 0 kill @s", and then either placing the stone yourself, or starting in a cave...

but, for someone who needs to play without cheats like if we are on cheats and go to creative we don't get that much feel or something. you can do this to keep grass 'execute @p ~ ~ ~ detect ~ ~ ~ grass 0 fill ~ ~ ~ ~ ~-1 ~ stone 0 replace grass'
