The Nether Reactor temporarily, artificially sustains a process called the Nether Reaction. This process can be seen over time near ruined portals, and is most prominent in the Nether in the form of 'Nether wasting' (The conversion of the Nether's own substrate to netherrack). Read mc wiki page.
