The successor to the well-known AW11 (first gen.) MR2, which was known for its spaceship, 80's like design, its speed and nimbleness - and of course, for its affordable price for midships in the market at the time. With such a legacy to its MR2 nameplate, the SW20 was praised by many in all sorts of aspects, yet criticized by those who dare drove it. Regardless, upon its debut, the SW20 caught many eyes. The change from the 80s wedge-shape design flow of the AW11 to the SW20 which was stylized with a more streamlined and rounded design which in turn gave it a Ferrari-esque impression, to which people would then dub the SW20 as the "Poor Man's Ferrari". Design aside, the SW20 is an all-time classic when it comes to sports cars. Rivalling other midship cars in the market such as the NSX, and even exports such as the V8-powered Ferrari 348, the MR2 SW20 can indeed hold a candle against mentioned rivals. Added by the fact of the difference in the average price tags of midships, the SW20 proved to be by far cheaper than its rivals, making it an affordable yet powerful choice for car enthusiasts who wanted to challenge themselves driving midships. In motorsports, this machine would also enjoy considerable success, proving to be a viable and competitive machine in competitions such as the Japanese Grand Touring Championship (JGTC)
